Since September is not too hot and not too cool it’s a very popular wedding month; you can find lots of information on September wedding flowers, but here we’ll give you just a taste. In the beginning of the month it’s still ok to use light colored flowers. You can use the previously mentioned Aster or Morning Glory flowers in your September wedding.

Flowers for the Month of September – Part 2

The September birthday flower is the Aster. It’s most often used as an accent in flower arrangements. This fair flower symbolizes daintiness and love. The September birthstone is the Sapphire, you could make some kind of arrangement that combines the beauty of both the sapphire and the Aster.

Another flower that is considered a September flower is the Morning Glory. This perfect little purple flower would also go great in an arrangement with the birthstone Sapphire. The summer is coming to an end, vacations are dwindling down and school is starting; this is when a flower lover starts to think of flowers for the month of September. Floral Centerpieces – Part 5

There are many creative things you can do with your floral centerpiece. You can add tapered candles to a piece to add a charming look to the table. Make sure the candles match the color of the flowers. Or you can use white or off white, they should match any floral arrangement. There are many accessories you can add to your centerpiece: berries, cinnamon sticks, fruit, some vegetables and foliage.

For a new and fresh idea try adding something small like cranberries to your flower water for a red flower. If the neck of the vase allows try using lemons or limes for yellow and green flowers. Make sure to leave enough room for water to sufficiently feed the plants.

Floral Centerpieces – Part 4

A few times in a year your family will come to eat the holiday meals with you; to wow them when they see the table, use a holiday floral centerpiece. Try to do something that will match the holiday. Try using appropriate colors – red and green for Christmas; brown, yellow, and orange for Thanksgiving; try using light colors for Easter, blues, pinks, purples.

Floral Centerpieces – Part 3

If you’re having a dinner party, consider decorating the table with a floral centerpiece. Since people are going to be talking through the meal the key to this is having a lower centerpiece. The size of your centerpiece is going to depend on the size of the table. If you only have four or six people at your table your piece will be smaller than a table with eight to twelve people. If you’re at a round table consider a round floral arrangement with a long arrangement at a rectangular table.

Since there will be food served try to not use a flower that has a very strong scent. If the colors allow, try using violets have a low scent, roses although they smell great, you usually have to get close to smell them. Carnations are another flower that doesn’t smell too strong and they last quite a long time if taken cared for properly.

Floral Centerpieces – Part 2

Wedding table centerpieces are most often floral. If you have a formal sit down dinner with guests at a round table there are many things you can do. Something that’s very popular is a tall vase with a long stemmed rose and some ribbon that flows to the table. You can surround that with petals on the table or you can put the vase on a mirror and put tea light candles on the mirror for a nice romantic feel.

For a less formal feeling try putting 3 or 5 flowers of your choice in a shorter vase. For the head table try lining the bridesmaid bouquets across the table with the bride’s bouquet in the middle placed in the same vases as the guest tables.

Floral Centerpieces – Part 1

If you like flowers and have a bare table why not try a floral centerpiece? Floral centerpieces can be used on all sizes and kinds of tables at a variety of functions or just to add that touch of color and perfume to your dining room or kitchen. Here you’ll find a starting place for the ideas and tips for a perfect floral centerpiece for your occasion.

Placement of a floral centerpiece depends on the occasion. At a table where people will be sitting to eat, place the arrangement in the center of the table whether it’s round or rectangular.

At a table where no one is eating try placing it on one side with the other objects in front or around it. If this is the case make sure the arrangement is large enough to be seen. If you’re using a smaller arrangement in this situation consider putting a box or large book (i.e. phone book) under the table cloth to raise it.

Floral Etiquette, Part 5

Since flowers make people happy, try to find out their favorite flower, or favorite color to enhance their happiness at seeing the wonderful gesture. Make sure the flowers you’re sending are appropriate for the situation and the person you’re buying for. Don’t ever be afraid to send flowers unless it’s considered inappropriate and your florist may be a good source of additional floral etiquette.

Sometimes people don’t think that there’s such a thing as floral etiquette. While this week hasn’t covered all situations, it has covered some practical etiquette. There is plenty of information online about when to send and what to send.

Make sure that your name is written on the card so that the recipient can properly thank you. If a large group sends the flowers and you can’t get all names on the card, use a group or family name to make sure the recipient knows who has been thinking of them.

Floral Etiquette, Part 4

Floral etiquette is something that most people sending get well flowers won’t think about. But don’t worry; flowers are a great way to cheer someone up who’s in the hospital. Before you call the florist make sure you have the name of the hospital, room number, the patient’s name and a delivery time prepared.

The person in the hospital will be greatly appreciative of the gesture. Don’t go overboard here, though. Most hospital rooms aren’t very big, so keep the arrangement simple and gender appropriate (see previous day’s post for floral etiquette for men).

Once the person has been discharged and they’re at home, it’s still ok to send get well flowers. Even though they’re happy to be home, it may be lonely during recovery. If the person lives in a small place remember not to over do the floral arrangement, but if they’re not very limited in space and you’re close to the person, they might really appreciate a sizable bouquet sent to their home.

Sending flowers to a man is becoming more popular. Make sure the man you’re sending flowers to won’t be offended by the thought. There aren’t any rules for sending to a man, but here’s some floral etiquette for that situations.

Since men are visually stimulated bright colors are good; try orange, yellow, and red. They’re less likely to enjoy a “fluffy” bouquet of flowers try something linear or nature like. Your florist can help you with any questions you have and they might have some good suggestions.

Floral Etiquette, Part 2

In most funeral services you’ll see different types of floral displays. One type of funeral where floral etiquette is different is a Jewish funeral. Flowers and music are considered inappropriate; making a donation to charity in the name of the deceased is an acceptable thing to do.

After a death, traditionally family and close friends will mourn for a week in the home of a family member. Bringing food to them and showing your respect is customary. Often instead of sending flowers, a fruit basket or other food basket may be sent that would be totally appropriate and very appreciated.

In non-Jewish funerals there is certain floral etiquette to respect. The major thing you want to stay away from is a tribute for the casket. That is typically done by the family or a very close friend. Most other things are acceptable. Make sure to call a local florist to see if the family or funeral home has any specific requests or restrictions.

Floral Etiquette, Part 1

Someone passes away or you want to give a loved one a boost, both of these reasons sound good for sending flowers, right?

Maybe not; in certain situations, sending flowers or certain types of flowers should only be done by certain people, or not at all. You want to know when it’s ok to send flowers and what’s ok to send.

Those are very good questions, ones that will be answered this week for a few different situations. Autumn Wedding Flowers, Part 4

Flowers make a great floral wedding cake topper if you don’t want to go with the traditional bride and groom. A set of three or five roses with the same colored petals adorning the wedding cake and table make a beautiful display.

For wedding center pieces use the same roses in small vases in sets of three in the center of round tables. If you have long tables try long stemmed roses laid on top of more of the burning bush accent. You could even string some wonderful dark green vine around head table.

Autumn Wedding Flowers, Part 2

For wedding flower accents you could shy away from the traditional and try some autumn themed shrubbery. The Emerald Gaiety version of the Burning Bush would be a great background for roses, especially in some arm held bouquets for bridesmaids.

Back to School Flowers

School is starting soon and as the parent of a student you might want to consider sending flowers to your child's teacher. It can be done anonymously so that you can avoid any suggestion of bribery or brown nosing (as it was called in my day). However a gift of flowers or a lovely back-to-school gift basket can be a powerful life to the spirit of the person who will be guiding the education of your child.

As a friend and relative of a couple of school teachers I can tell you that they pretty much have a thankless job. For one thing, just because school is out for the summer, does not mean that they also enjoy a vacation. Many of these dedicated educators spend the summer on the lookout for new items to take to school in the fall to stimulate their class's interest.

They also go back to school early to prepare their classroom and to put up fresh decorations (especially in the elementary grades), banners and posters. In some schools, if they want a new wall color, they have to do the painting themselves!

During the school year, they arrive at school well in advance of the thankless hoards called students, they stay late, and then they usually take papers home to grade. Weekends are usually given over to lesson planning, reading reports and grading tests.

These duties are all done on a salary that most educated professionals would consider chickenfeed. While in some locations their very lives are in danger from the very students they are there to educate. Think you have a rough job? Try being a school teacher!

Going a Little Overboard?

That is definitely going a little overboard. No one can live in this life and not "kill" something. I bet the person who wrote this sentiment uses some kind of antibacterial soap, toothpaste or dishsoap. How terrible! Do you know how many living creatures you kill everytime you brush your teeth? How crude!

Why don't we just enjoy the beauty of flowers, whether we admire them from afar or graciously accept that bouquet of roses that a sweetheart just sent. There is nothing like the fragrance of a bouquet of flowers perched on a sideboard.

Even better is the wonderful dance of the senses when one wanders through a flower garden sparkling with the diamond-like shine of water droplets left from a spring shower while inhaling the rich aroma of a variety of blooms.

See the flowers? Close your eyes, inhale and enjoy the fragrance without feeling guilty.

If you haven't stopped and smelled the flowers lately, perhaps you live in Texas and your flowers have all drowned. Then again, I just noticed the other day that the tree that grows next to my patio is dripping with vibrant pink flowers. So perhaps the payoff of so much rain is that the extra moisture has allowed the spring flowers to last into summer.
